Claude's built-in Gmail connector works with one Google account at a time. This guide gives Claude all of your Gmail inboxes at once, so you can say "what came in across my inboxes today?", "find the invoice from Acme in my work email" or "reply to that from my personal address".
I built this for my own three Gmail accounts and use it with Claude. It runs in your own free Cloudflare account and talks to Gmail directly. There's no subscription, no Google Cloud project to set up, and nothing passes through my servers or anyone else's. Claude can search, read, label, archive and draft, and it can send email too, but only after it shows you the exact email and you say yes.
Why Claude can only see one Gmail account
Claude reaches outside services through connectors (also called MCP servers: MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is a standard way for AI assistants to use tools). The Gmail connector Claude ships with signs in to one Google account. Signing in with a second account replaces the first.
The usual workarounds are paid services that sign in to all your accounts and pass your email through their servers, or self-hosted servers that need your own Google Cloud app. A Google Cloud app that hasn't been through Google's review makes you sign in again every 7 days, and getting Gmail access reviewed means a paid security assessment.
This guide skips all of that. Gmail lets you create an app password (a separate 16-letter password for one app, which you can revoke at any time) for each account. A small connector in your own Cloudflare account uses those app passwords to talk to Gmail the same way a mail app like Outlook or Apple Mail does, and offers all your inboxes to Claude as one connector.
What you need
- Gmail accounts (any number) with 2-Step Verification turned on. Google only offers app passwords when it's on. I tested personal
@gmail.comaccounts. Google Workspace accounts work only if your admin allows app passwords. - A free Cloudflare account. The connector runs here. The free plan is plenty for personal use.
- Claude on any plan that allows custom connectors, including Free (one custom connector). Web, desktop and mobile all work once it's added.
- A password manager. You'll create one passphrase and copy one app password per account. Paste them; don't type them.
Setup, step by step
Google and Cloudflare update their pages often. If a button is worded slightly differently from what you see here, look for the closest match.
1Turn on 2-Step Verification for each account
- Sign in to the account at myaccount.google.com/security. If you're signed in to several Google accounts, check the picture in the top right corner shows the right one.
- Under How you sign in to Google, open 2-Step Verification and turn it on if it's off.
- Make sure it lists at least one second step that isn't a passkey or security key, such as Google prompt, an Authenticator app, or a phone number. Accounts that only use passkeys or security keys don't get app passwords.
Repeat for every account you want to connect. Google emails you a "2-Step Verification turned on" alert for each one; that's expected.
2Create an app password for each account
- While signed in to the account, open myaccount.google.com/apppasswords. Google usually asks for the account's password again first ("To continue, first verify it's you"). That's normal.
- Enter a name you'll recognize, such as
Claude inbox, and choose Create. - Google shows a 16-letter password in four groups, like
abcd efgh ijkl mnop. Copy it into your password manager next to the account's address. Google only shows it once.
If the page says "The setting you are looking for is not available for your account.", 2-Step Verification isn't fully on for that account. Go back to Step 1.
3Create the connector in Cloudflare

Version 1.0.0. Scroll the box to read it first; you don't need to change anything in it.
- Sign in to dash.cloudflare.com, or create a free account.
- Open Compute → Workers & Pages in the sidebar, choose Create application, then Start with Hello World!. Change the Worker name to something like
multi-inboxand choose Deploy. - Choose Edit code (top right). Click in the editor, select everything (Ctrl+A, or Cmd+A on a Mac), delete it, paste in the connector code, and choose Deploy again.
- Open your Worker's address, shown on its overview page. It looks like
https://multi-inbox.your-name.workers.dev.
The page should show one line, inbox-mcp 1.0.0. That's your connector running. If it still says Hello World!, wait half a minute and reload; the new code takes a moment to reach every server. I'll call its address "your connector address" from here on. A brand-new address can show a security error for about a minute while its certificate is issued. Wait, then reload.
4Add storage and your passphrase
- Open Storage & databases → Workers KV in the sidebar, choose Create a KV namespace, give it any name, and choose Create.
- Go back to your Worker and open its Settings tab. Under Bindings, choose Add binding, pick KV namespace, and choose Add Binding. For Variable name, enter exactly
KV, select the namespace you just created, and choose Add Binding. - On the same Settings tab, under Variables and secrets, choose Add variable. For Key, enter
PROXY_PASSPHRASE. For Value, paste a long passphrase, such as five or six random words; it must be at least 16 characters. Tick Secret, then choose Add variable and deploy. Save the passphrase in your password manager. It's what stops anyone else from connecting an assistant to your email.
5Add your Gmail accounts
Each account is one more secret, added the same way as the passphrase (Settings → Variables and secrets → Add variable):
- For Key, enter
GMAIL_followed by a short word for the account, such asGMAIL_PERSONALorGMAIL_WORK. That word becomes the account's name in Claude (personal, work). Use only letters, numbers and underscores. - For Value, paste the account's address, a space, then its app password:
you@gmail.com abcd efgh ijkl mnop. The spaces inside the app password are fine. - Tick Secret and choose Add variable and deploy. Repeat for each account.
The connector reads its accounts from these secrets every time, so adding or removing an account later is just adding or deleting a secret.
6Connect Claude
- In Claude, open Customize in the left sidebar, then the Connectors tab, and choose + Add → Add custom connector. On a Team or Enterprise plan, an Owner adds it under Organization settings → Connectors.
- For Name, enter something like
Multi Inbox. For MCP server URL, enteryour connector address/mcp, for examplehttps://multi-inbox.your-name.workers.dev/mcp. - Open Advanced. Under OAuth client, choose Register automatically. Leave Authentication on Sign in now.
- Choose Continue and connect. Your connector opens an Authorize page. Check it says
claude.ai, enter your passphrase, and approve.
Claude should now list the connector as connected. It carries over to the Claude desktop and mobile apps.
7Make Claude ask before it sends (recommended)
Open Customize → Connectors → Yours and select your connector. Under Tool permissions, find Confirm send (in "Write/delete tools") and choose the hand icon, Needs approval. Now every send needs two things from you: your "yes" in the chat, and a click on Claude's approval prompt. You can do the same for Modify if you'd like to approve every archive, label and trash.
8Try it
Start a new chat and ask "List my email accounts." You should see each account's name, address and unread count. Then try "Show me today's unread email in all my inboxes." Finally, send yourself a test: "Send a test email from my personal account to my work account." Claude shows you the email and asks first; say yes, and it arrives a few seconds later.
What you can say
- Search: "Anything from my bank this week?", "Find emails with PDF attachments from Acme in my work inbox", "Unread email in all accounts". Claude can use Gmail's own search words, like
from:,newer_than:7dandhas:attachment. - Read: "Read me the latest email from Sam", "Summarize that whole thread". Reading doesn't mark email as read.
- Organize: "Archive all the newsletters in my personal inbox", "Label those Receipts", "Star it", "Mark them read", "Move it to the trash".
- Draft: "Draft a reply to that from my work account". The draft lands in that account's Drafts folder for you to finish in Gmail.
- Send: "Reply to Sam from my personal account saying Thursday works". Replies stay in the same conversation in Gmail.
Under the hood there are 11 tools: list accounts, search, read, read a thread, list labels, change messages (read, star, archive, label, trash), draft, send, confirm send, cancel send, and send status.
How sending works
Sending always takes two steps, on purpose:
- Claude prepares the email. The connector builds the exact message (from, to, cc, bcc, subject and text) and shows it to Claude with a one-time confirmation code. Nothing has been sent yet. Claude shows you the email and asks.
- You say yes. Only then does Claude call
confirm_sendwith the code, and the connector sends exactly the email you saw. If you want changes, Claude prepares a new one; if you say no, it's cancelled.
Each prepared email can be sent once, with the right code, within 24 hours. Gmail files sent mail in the account's Sent folder as usual, with the account's own name and address.
What it doesn't do
- No permanent deletes. "Delete" moves email to Gmail's Trash, where you can recover it for 30 days. There's no tool to empty the Trash.
- No account settings. It can't change filters, forwarding, signatures, passwords or any other Gmail setting.
- No attachments. Claude sees attachment names, types and sizes, but doesn't open them, and sends plain-text email without attachments.
- Gmail only. It's built for Gmail's way of handling labels and search. Outlook and other providers aren't supported.
- Long emails are trimmed. Claude reads the first 15,000 characters of an email and the last 20 messages of a thread, which covers almost everything.
Other AI assistants
The connector's sign-in is the same standard one my other connectors use with ChatGPT (Developer mode connectors), Gemini (custom apps) and Grok (custom connectors), so it should work with them using the same /mcp address and passphrase. I've only tested this one with Claude. For their exact steps, see the "Connect your assistant" section of my Tesla guide, where they're the same.
Troubleshooting: Claude Gmail connector not working
"The setting you are looking for is not available for your account."
Google shows this on the app passwords page when 2-Step Verification is off, or when the account only uses passkeys or security keys, or has Advanced Protection on. Turn on 2-Step Verification with a phone prompt, Authenticator app or phone number (Step 1), then reload the page. On a Workspace account, your admin may have turned app passwords off.
"No Gmail accounts set up yet. Add a secret named GMAIL_<NAME>"
The connector found no account secrets. Each account needs a Secret whose name starts with GMAIL_ (Step 5), and the Worker needs deploying after you add them.
"Gmail refused the sign-in for ... Invalid credentials"
The app password in that account's secret is wrong or was revoked. Create a new app password (Step 2) and paste it into the secret again. Make sure the value starts with the address, then a space, then the app password, and that you used the app password, not your normal Google password.
"Account work: the secret must start with the email address, then the app password."
The secret's value is in the wrong order or is missing the address. It should look like you@gmail.com abcd efgh ijkl mnop.
"Storage isn't connected: add a KV namespace binding named KV."
The storage binding is missing or misspelled. It must be exactly KV, on the Bindings tab (Step 4).
"PROXY_PASSPHRASE is not set, or is shorter than 16 characters."
The passphrase secret is missing or too short. Set PROXY_PASSPHRASE as a Secret (Step 4), deploy, and try connecting again.
"wrong confirm_code" or "no such email waiting"
The prepared email expired (24 hours), was already sent or cancelled, or Claude mixed up two emails. Ask Claude to prepare it again. Nothing was sent.
Claude doesn't show new tools after an update
Claude remembers a connector's tools from when you connected it. Open Customize → Connectors → Yours, select the connector, choose Disconnect, then connect it again (your passphrase is all you need), and start a new chat.
"Worker exceeded resource limits" (error 1102)
Cloudflare's free plan limits how much computing one request can use. I measured 6 to 30 milliseconds per request on my own email and never hit it, but an unusual email could. If you see this often, Cloudflare's Workers Paid plan ($5 a month) raises the limit far beyond what the connector needs.
Connecting shows {"error":"invalid_client"}
Claude tried to sign in with its published identity, which this connector doesn't use. Remove the connector in Claude, add it again, and under Advanced → OAuth client choose Register automatically (Step 6).
Adding the connector fails, or mentions "redirect host not allowed"
The connector only sends sign-ins back to known assistants: Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Grok. If you use a different MCP app, add its sign-in host to a Text variable ALLOWED_REDIRECT_HOSTS (comma-separated). That replaces the built-in list, so include the ones you still use.
Security and privacy
- It runs in your account. The connector is your own Cloudflare Worker. Your app passwords are encrypted secrets in your Cloudflare account; Cloudflare doesn't show them again after you save them, and they never touch my servers.
- App passwords are powerful. An app password can read and send mail for its account, so treat each one like a password. It can't change your Google password or account settings, and you can revoke it at any time without affecting anything else.
- Your passphrase gates every assistant. No assistant can connect without your passphrase on the Authorize page, and the connector only sends sign-ins back to the assistants listed above. Tokens are stored hashed, and repeated wrong passphrases lock the sign-in page for an hour.
- Sending needs your yes. Every email is shown to you before it goes out, and only the exact email you saw can be sent. Emails Claude reads are treated as untrusted: if an email tells Claude to send something, Claude still has to show you and ask.
- What it can never do. It has no way to permanently delete email, empty the Trash, change Gmail or Google settings, create forwarding or filters, or download attachments.
- What others see. Google sees the connection like any mail app. Cloudflare runs the code. Anthropic (or whichever assistant you use) sees the emails you ask it to read, the same as with any email connector.
If you think someone else has access
- Change your passphrase (the
PROXY_PASSPHRASEsecret). This disconnects every assistant at once; reconnect yours with the new passphrase. - Revoke the app passwords at myaccount.google.com/apppasswords for each account. The connector loses access immediately. Create new ones and update the
GMAIL_secrets when you're ready. - Check each account's recent activity under Security → Your devices and Recent security activity in your Google account.

Use at your own risk. The connector is provided as-is, without warranty of any kind, under the MIT license included in the code. AI assistants make mistakes: read every email before you confirm it, and check what Claude archives or trashes.
Things outside my control can change. Google, Cloudflare and the AI companies can change or stop the services this depends on at any time, including app passwords. This project isn't affiliated with or endorsed by Google, Anthropic or Cloudflare.

FAQ
Do I need to know how to code?
No. You paste the code into Cloudflare once and do everything else in Google's and Cloudflare's dashboards. You never edit the code.
What does it cost?
Nothing for personal use. Cloudflare's free plan and app passwords are free. Claude needs a plan with custom connectors; Free includes one.
Can Claude send email without asking me?
Not through this connector. Sending is two steps: Claude prepares the email and shows it to you, and it only goes out when Claude confirms with the one-time code after you say yes. With Confirm send set to Needs approval (Step 7), you also click Claude's approval prompt.
Why app passwords instead of signing in with Google?
Signing in with Google needs your own Google Cloud app. Without Google's review, those sign-ins expire every 7 days, and Gmail access needs a paid security assessment to get reviewed. App passwords work until you revoke them.
Does it mark my email as read?
No. Reading through the connector leaves email unread. Ask Claude to mark it read if you want that.
How many accounts can I add?
As many as you like. I use three. Each account is one secret.
Does it work with Google Workspace accounts?
Only if your admin allows app passwords and IMAP. Many workplaces turn them off. I've only tested personal Gmail accounts.
Why does it need a passphrase if Claude has its own login?
Anyone can find a workers.dev address. The passphrase makes sure only you can connect an assistant to it, and so to your email.
